LA Times Looks Forward to Super X at the X Games
At X Games 16 there's something new-- and something old, revisited.
by Baxter HolmesBoil the history of action sports down to its essence, and a single phrase emerges: Can you top this?
That concept has driven the sport's growth for decades, and the X Games does the same, adding new events or twists to old ones seemingly every year.
For example, the X Games added the big air skateboarding event in 2004 after Danny Way, the event's pioneer, pushed for it. Another change came in 2009 when X Games officials heeded the request of skaters and created a concrete skate park for a different skateboarding competition, switching from the wooden park used the year before.
This year, at X Games 16, which begins Thursday in downtown Los Angeles, there are two new events, plus an old event that returns to its iconic birthplace. Here's a look at what's new:
Real Street
In a nod to the growing skateboard filming industry, the X Games allowed 12 top street skaters to each submit a one-minute, trick-loaded video for a shot at a gold medal and a $50,000 first prize.
"There's a huge segment of skaters and all they want to do is film," said Tim Reed, ESPN senior director of sports and competition. "It's great to give them a board platform to show what they can do."
The videos are available online and will be telecast Sunday. A panel of professional skaters will decide the winner. Fans can vote online for their own favorite; the winner there gets $2,500.
Johnny Layton, a street skater from Long Beach, agreed to enter the competition because making videos is a daily routine for him, as it is with many other skaters. "It's crazy — every day you can go online and there's another person with another video," he said. (read more...)

If you're like 2.5 million other viewers, on Tuesday night, July 12, 2010, you tuned-in to watch the final episode of the MTV series The Hills. In that final episode appeared Team Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki rider Josh Hansen. A series that has followed the jet set/Lipstick City lifestyle of a few 20-something Hollywood Hills-based young women, one of the stars of the wildly popular reality series is a girl named Stephanie Pratt. Well, while the final year of production was up and running, Stephanie Pratt met Josh Hansen and the two became an item. So much so that Hansen appeared in a few of the show's final episodes. And in the very final show, Hansen brought Pratt out to show her just what he did for a living.
"Josh invited me to go and watch him do Supercross," Pratt said to one of her buddies in that episode. "I'm going to go down the track."
And that she did. And after Hansen rode for a while, bedazzling her, she commented, "Oh my God! No way! You're, like, the most masculine guy I've ever dated."
Yep. So in the spring and summer of 2010, not only did Josh Hansen find a way back onto the victory podium (at the Salt Lake Supercross), he also managed to receive some prime time TV coverage and pull a pretty cool chick. Josh Hansen is on a bit of a roll as of late, and that's a good thing as he prepares to go after his third consecutive X Games Super X Gold Medal in two weeks' time at the ancient Los Angeles memorial Coliseum. Putting in countless laps on the Kawasaki test track, today, after a lengthy practice and test session in 103-degree heat, Hansen swung by to say hello and fill us in on what's been going on in his life.
"A lot of people follow that show," he explained when we asked him what it was like to be a part of The Hills. "It's kind of crazy because I've never followed the show. I didn't know people were so pumped and hyped on it. However, I just want to be Josh the Dirt Bike Guy." (read more...)

::HOT from Koch:: X Games Champ Josh Hansen Shoots for a Three-Peat Victory
Following a comeback season, the 26-year-old has been invited to compete in this year’s following main events: Best Whip, Speed & Style and Super X. Hansen hopes to close the summer with another win under his belt.
In 2009, Hansen elected to put his career on hold after the tragic loss of two close friends, choosing only four AMA races to compete in for the year. In January, renowned motocross coach Mitch Payton selected Hansen to ride the West Region for the Monster Energy/Pro Circuit team. Making what many have called a comeback, Hansen finished at the top of the season, winning the final round of the 2010 Supercross West Lites series at Salt Lake City, placing second at the AMA East/West Shootouts in Vegas, and concluding top 10 overall.
Since stepping into the limelight of professional motocross at the age of 17, Hansen’s career has exploded, receiving top honors in the AMA Lites Class and Full Factory Ride sponsorships, a professional campaign that has placed him amongst the very best of the sport.

Josh Hansen Talks X Games With ESPN Action Sports
CONSISTENTLY HANSEN
By BJ Smith
When considering the entirety of the supercross and motocross schedules many riders keep in a season the Moto X Super X final is a mere moment; it's a thrilling 20 lap 'blip' on one hot summer afternoon in Los Angeles. For two consecutive years those 20 laps were all Josh Hansen had to his name. Until 2010, living for the moment was the best way to describe Hansen's nine year professional racing career.
Dom Cooley/Shazamm/ESPN ImagesGold medalist, Josh Hansen in the Moto X Super X Final at X Games 15.
Hansen's story is well known. He's the talented son of a former AMA Supercross and motocross champion who learned the hard way that talent alone doesn't win races and championships. Despite annihilating the Super X field in 2008 on a bike and team he'd hastily scrapped together, Hansen spent the next 11 months jumping around to different teams and borrowed bikes before he finally found himself in a position where he didn't even want to ride motorcycles. "It's an eye opener when you know you've reached rock bottom," Hansen said. Comparing his life today with one year ago, Hansen said he had nothing.
As the defending gold medalist, Hansen knew being competitive would be tough because the only bike he owned on July 1, 2009 was a clapped out KX450 that surfing legend Sunny Garcia had given him. Two weeks before the '09 X Games Hansen went to Pro Circuit to beg for a pipe and silencer for his beater ride and hit up owner Mitch Payton for help. Payton, the manager of Monster Pro Circuit Kawasaki, the most powerful non-factory team in racing shocked Josh by calling him back the following week. He was given a bike and full team support for the X Games and the X Games only. Beyond that, Payton promised, he was back on the street.
Hansen repeated in '09 for another gold medal, a win as shocking as his performance a year earlier. Payton kept "Lil Hanny" on the Pro Circuit lineup but made him sweat a little by waiting until the fall to officially offer a racing deal for the 2010 AMA Supercross season. Hansen hasn't been the same since. Maybe it was hitting 'rock bottom' earlier in the summer or maybe it was the intimidation of riding under the eye and on the equipment of the best in the championship business but something happened after XG '09, something that took until the age of 25 to find -- consistency.
"I haven't been doing anything new or revolutionary," he said. "It's been as simple as being consistent with my training, my schedule and actually having goals. I even started doing motos at the practice track, something I'd never done in the past." The 2010 SX West Lites season was his best since he tied Grant Langston for the championship back in 2005. Early on he struggled with minor injuries but the year ended with a win in Utah and a second place in the East/West shootout, a race that combines the top riders from each of the two regions in the country. ::HOT from Koch:: Josh Hansen Revs Up for Another Win at AMA Supercross Las Vegas
Following his 2009 hiatus from racing due to the tragic loss of two close friends, Josh’s January return to the track aroused anticipation among motocross buffs who wondered what the 26-year-old would bring to the Monster Energy Team this season. However, aided by the guidance of Mitch Payton, Hansen re-emerged just as his fans remembered him: a rider with smooth, effortless style, undeniable speed, and a down-to-earth persona that hardly hints at the fact that he’s been making a name for himself in the racing world since high school.
The son of champion rider Donnie Hansen, Josh surprised everyone when he won X Games 14 in 2008 as the underdog. But when he took home the gold again the following year, it became clear that Josh Hansen was a force to be reckoned with.
Now, Hansen concludes his comeback AMA Supercross season triumphantly, ending with that elusive win under his belt, along with other top-five finishes. The icing on the cake would be to surprise his fans with a another win at the East/West Shootout – right before taking home his third consecutive X Games medal in August.

::HOT from Koch:: Monster Energy's No. 100 Prepares to Give 100 Percent at Seattle Supercross

Top motocross rider and two-time X Games champion Josh Hansen is poised to make a long-awaited comeback when he rides the Monster Energy AMA Seattle Supercross, April 24, at Qwest Field.
Following the tragic loss of two close friends, Hansen elected to put his career on hold in 2009, choosing only four AMA races to compete in for the year. Needless to say, fans were excited when it was announced in January that Mitch Payton had selected Josh to ride the West Region for Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki for the 2010 season. Acknowledged to be among the handful of riders with the ability to win a West Regional race, Josh is off to a top-ten start this season.
The son of champion rider Donnie Hansen, Josh rocked the motocross world when he took home the gold at X Games 14 in 2008 as the underdog. When he won again the following year, it became clear that Josh’s success was no fluke. The 26-year-old has since become regarded as the bad boy of motocross, boasting a smooth style inherited from his famous dad, and possessing a laidback attitude that hardly hints at the fact that he’s been racing professionally since high school.
Now, having spent the season break training harder than ever under Payton’s mentorship, Josh is expected to appear in top form at the Main Event in Seattle.
