Trick or Treat, LA Be So Sweet, EKC Knows the Hot Spots to Meet
Halloween weekend is now upon us and you better believe that EKC is taking full advantage of all of the fun stuff that L.A. has to offer this weekend. All the work the EKC staff has been doing this month for our November 11th event for client Endless Youth & Life and the grand opening of their boutique on Bedford Drive in Beverly Hills has really gotten us in the party spirit. While Eileen may be the gHOSTESS with the mostest, there are some fabulous and spooktacular events this weekend that definitely deserve some attention.
Tonight, Whiskey Blue in the W Westwood invites all the guys and ghouls to their Nightmare Halloween Costume Ball. Special guest DJs include DJ David Rockwell, DJ Still Wil and DJ Clenzroc. If you're having trouble finding a costume, just grab a mask and hit up Teddy's Masquerade Party. Saturday, don't miss everyone's favorite DJ, Dirty South at Hollywood hot-spot Avalon. Party-goers will be in full force and you will not want to miss out! If you find yourself in the O.C., check out AnQi, a restaurant with glamorous decor and even better food. Their Halloween masquerade party, Glamour & Ghouls, will have beats spun by Hollywood favorite, DJ Angeline. To wrap up your fang-tastic weekend, on Sunday, October 31 check out everyone's favorite guido DJ Pauly D from Jersey Shore at Vanguard. It will also be the last night you can check out the infamous Haunted Hayride at its new 2010 location!
To all the ladies prancing out on the town this weekend: you may be too cute to spook, but don't forget you need a place to put your red lipstick or those extra pair of fangs. Make everyone scream with envy and carry your favorite Linda Masquefa clutch. Whether it's a sexy black crocodile cluth, or a gold metallic python, you'll definitely be the envy of all the other witches and black cats.
Whatever you decide to do, be, or wear this weekend, make sure you do it in style, have fun, and most importantly, BE SAFE! Eat, drink and be scary!
Bugs & Hisses,

All Dogs May Go To Heaven, But EKC Client, Frances Hayward, Makes Sure They Enjoy Their Time on Earth
Hayward has spread the message on the importance of saving strays
Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend, was a song written by Frances Hayward’s uncle. But had he been thinking of her when he wrote it, the lyrics would have been different. For Hayward, a Juilliard music graduate who majored in dance, and once studied under the famous Martha Graham, it would be dogs who would be her best friends. And vice versa.
Although she has owned as many as 16 at once, one named Amigo was like a diamond and shone out. He was a hungry stray called a “potcake,” and she found him in the Bahamas.
“He had such charisma, that spot-a-star-in-a-second quality like Lana Turner in him,” she recalled.
With her tireless efforts, her beloved Amigo became an international spokesdog, poster pet and mascot. They toured together, carrying his message throughout the world: the importance of saving strays, and neutering and spaying animals. “I have devoted my life to continuing Amigo’s legacy,“ she said.
She is still active in animal welfare in the Bahamas, sponsoring spray/neuter clinics and puppy lifts, and helping other potcakes through her charitable trust called Amigo’s Fund.
Alas, Amigo died l½ years ago. But when Hayward saw another potcake she later named Buster Brown, “he was skin and bones and so sick I had to give him a chance,” she said. And 12 years later, “he’s a strapping boy,” suffering basically only from eye problems.
Besides Hayward, Buster Brown has another “best friend,” a diamond in the rough in the form of “a maladjusted cat who hates everyone but him,” she continued. “These two love each other.”
So, Buster Brown lives a happy life on the island with Hayward and his occasional visiting cat-friend, while carrying a message a little different from Amigo’s: one of compassion and caring for older animals (and people).

EKC Client, Softline, Featured in the Wall Street Journal Online!
The global fabric importer, which started as a family business and now rakes in more than $50 million a year, is featured on WallStreetJournal.com today. WSJ.com used Softline moguls Jason & Rodney Carr as examples of small business owners who have taken steps to prepare for a second slump in the economy. Check it out:
Small Businesses Held Back by 'Vicious Cycle'
by Emily MaltbySmall businesses, known for jump-starting economies, aren't upholding their reputation.
During past recessions, small firms have been the forerunners in hiring and growth, and the harbingers of recovery. But this time, they are holding back, seemingly more than large companies.
The reservation appears to stem from a general uncertainty—felt by consumers and owners alike—about whether economic conditions will worsen again before they improve. Some 86% of small-business owners say they are concerned about a double-dip recession, according to a survey published by Citigroup last month.
"A lot of small businesses have direct [contact] with consumers," says Stephen P. A. Brown, director of the Center for Business and Economic Research at the University of Nevada in Las Vegas. "Consumer income just isn't back yet. Consumer sentiment about the future isn't back. And while everyone waits, everyone remains pessimistic."
Consumer confidence likely won't improve until jobs return, but businesses won't hire until consumers spend more, triggering a "vicious cycle" of unemployment and slow sales, says Mr. Brown.
Bob Brueckman, owner of a BrightStar Care franchise in Gambrills, Md., isn't prepared to expand until his cash flow improves. BrightStar, which provides in-home senior care, has brought in more customers during the recession because its services can be more affordable than assisted living or nursing homes. But customers, who are also cash-strapped, are delinquent payers. That makes it tough for Mr. Brueckman to meet payroll for his 100 employees. (read more...)

Let's Talk About Sex, Baby! (Or Let Dating Guru Rachel Canis)
Are Guys More Freaked Out Over Sex Than We Are?
by Liz Brody
I was still in my pajamas this morning (don't ask what time) when I turned on the computer to find it was National Unmarried and Single Americans Week. Who knew? But apparently September 19 to 25 has been set aside to honor the more than 100,000 adult solo citizens of this country. It occurred to me that such an occasion should be acknowledged. So after watching an old episode of The Match Off, (that NBC show where two pros vie to fix up a picky single), I called one of the dating experts on it, Rachel Canis. She was actually the loser, but I don't know... I like her shoes theory: "Make sure you can walk in them. I don't care how old you are."
That POV, it turns out, goes nicely with the name of her high-end dating service, Best Foot Forward, in Chicago. In any case, it was Canis, who told me she'd interviewed 500 of the windy city's singles this year and discovered a surprising new trend. When couples first have sex, according to her research, women take it in stride; it's the guys who freak out. They overanalyze. They worry what it all means. They feel the air thinning and turn into Carrie Bradshaw on a mountaintop doing a one-night-stand postmortem.
What happened to all that sowing of wild oats?
"We found that men were over-thinking it more than women," Canis says. "Some guys don't, but a certain percentage of them assume that after sex, the woman is already picking out china patterns, and they worry there's a new obligation. Ironically, for most the ladies we interviewed, sex was just part of the dating process to see where things were going."
Canis went on to say that men even flip out if the woman thanks them for date (Oh boy, "I Love Lucy" just turned into Lucy the hominid.) "I'd think it was common courtesy to send a text if you had a really good time," she admitted, "but for some reason it makes men feel more pressured. I find that men still want to control the pace of the relationship."

Summer is Ending…But the Holidays are Right Around the Corner!
In January 2010, EKC client Amy Weber dazzled the cover of Germany’s Maxim with her stunning bikini bod. The cover serves as a real inspiration not just to women who want to stay bikini ready all year long, but to new mom’s trying to get their taut figure back! With the bikini-friendly Labor Day parties over and the combination of cooler weather and the high-calorie foods that accompany those Monday night football parties everyone loves so much, it’s easy to fall off the wagon! Just thinking of Amy Weber and her Maxim cover has given all the girls at EKC a new burst of inspiration to stay fit this holiday season. Wonder who will be next to grace the cover of Maxim for the 2011 year!
In addition to looking good, Amy also has a few television shows in development and is currently the spokesperson for www.BestStreak.com, a sporting network that will be launching their website this October.

GotCast.com Founder Alec Shankman Featured in LA Business Journal
Alec Shankman: The Real DealMidwest transplant Alec Shankman launched a casting site for reality TV hopefuls after working as an agent for some of the genre’s star
by Natalie JarveyWhen Alec Shankman came to Los Angeles in his early 20s, he quickly became a force in reality television as head of alternative programming at Abrams Artists Agency, representing such reality stars as Mystery, star of VH1’s “The Pickup Artist,” and Chad Rodgers, star of Bravo’s “Million Dollar Listing.” He used the expertise he developed in that world to transition from show business to technology as chief executive of GotCast, which combines reality show casting with social networking – wannabe stars create profiles and hope they’ll win the most votes in casting competitions. Shankman had started in the business world with a cologne line in his native Ohio, then took a stab at nightclub promoting there. With a friend, Wil Schroter, he launched his own club, Status, and auto leasing website Swapalease, then headed West. Schroter followed and launched GotCast. Shankman recently sat down with the Business Journal in office space they share with another startup off Santa Monica’s Third Street Promenade to chat about discovering Mystery for “The Pickup Artist,” failing his motorcycle driving test, and how his mom regularly flies here from Ohio and can often be found making breakfast for Shankman and his three brothers at the Beverly Hills home they share.
Question: Did you have an interest in Hollywood and celebrities growing up?
Answer: Absolutely. One of my best friends and next-door neighbor growing up was a kid named Dino Rinaldo, and his father, Lil’ John, was a local celebrity in Cleveland for a show he co-hosted called “The Big Chuck and Lil’ John Show.” Spending a lot of my childhood with their family introduced me to the ’biz at a young age and I was hooked.
Who were your celebrity idols when you were young?
Two people come to mind: Jim Brickman and Michael Eisner. Jim is a musician from Cleveland who made the move to L.A. and became a pretty big star in adult contemporary music. Michael Eisner always inspired me because of his incredible journey that ultimately took him to mogul status in Hollywood. I read multiple books about him when I was growing up.
Have you met them?
I met Jim a few years after moving to L.A. and actually became his agent for a while, representing him for his TV work as a host. And I ended up in the same room as Michael Eisner at an exclusive party in L.A. It made me feel like I had made it. (read more...)

Has Kelly Osbourne got a new man already? Newly-single star dines with BMX biker Josh Hansen
Kelly Osbourne sure does like her motocross men.

They also have a lively, ongoing Twitter conversation with Osbourne using her considerable Twitter clout to get her followers to jump onto Hansen's far more paltry account.Osbourne has vowed that if Hansen does not get 10,000 Twitter followers by the end of the week she will have to pass on her beloved Pomeranian pup Sid to him for a week (he's at 8,158, so it might be time to pack up the water bowl). Rest in Peace, Dr. Ryan
Los Angeles and the world has lost a man who was both remarkably talented and genuinely kind. Eileen and her daughter, Joey, had the pleasure of knowing the legendary surgeon since he started his practice in LA. They came to know Dr. Ryan not only as a brilliant artist, but a caring doctor and sincerely compassionate person. He gave so much of himself to each patient, making everyone feel like an A-lister. Meanwhile, he was a dedicated philanthropist, who worked to improve the lives of underprivileged youth through his nonprofit organization.
A candlelight vigil will be held tonight at Zuma Beach in remembrance of Dr. Ryan. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends during this difficult time.

Eileen Talks About Jennifer Aniston & Single Parenthood
Jennifer Aniston Slammed for Suggesting Dads Are Optional in FamiliesJennifer Aniston’s recent comments about how men are optional in child raising has sparked outrage from those who believe the 41-year-old actress has an unrealistic perception of what it really takes to raise children alone.
“(Promoting single parenthood) might be the norm in the Hollywood, but the rest of America believes children deserve and need a mother and a father,” Nathan Burchfiel of the MRC’s Culture and Media Institute told Pop Tarts. “Life is extremely difficult for single moms, with about one quarter of them living below the poverty line. But of course Jennifer doesn’t have to worry about that given her financial resources.”
Lynda Powell of the Bethel Foundation, a non-profit organization that seeks to support single moms attain housing, rehabilitation and mentoring, echoed Burchfiel’s sentiments that the “single life” is far from glamorizing or gratifying.
“Jen needs to come back to the real world of where the average, everyday mother does not begin to make the money to provide adequately for her children,” Powell said. “We work with single mothers everyday where the father is absent and we see the sadness this brings into the family. From my own experience as a single mother, I know that having a positive male in the family unit makes a huge difference in that child's life. Our prison systems are now overloaded and many that are in the prison system did not have a male role model in their life. We need to stop and think 'What are we doing to our children by choosing to have a baby without the family unit intact?’”
A CBS poll conducted last year showed that the children of single and/or unmarried parents were impacted significantly harder by the economic recession. A 2006 study conducted by the National Center for Juvenile Justice also found that juveniles who lived with both biological parents were less likely to join gangs or break the law than their single-parent or orphaned counterparts.
Aniston, who plays a woman that opts for single parenthood by choosing to become pregnant via artificial insemination in her new film “The Switch,” also blasted the value of the classic family model by stating that family life has "evolved" from "the traditional stereotype” defined by “a mother, father, two children
and a dog named Spot.”
“A woman can have children without a father to raise them, but it's the children who pay the high price for that decision,”said Wendy Wright, President of the conservative political Christian action group, Concerned Women for America. “Hollywood celebrities have long been in the forefront of mocking social norms, to their own detriment and the shattered lives of those who follow their example.”
“Traditional family values may be boring for Hollywood celebrities, but they develop stable, secure
and healthy people,” Wright added. “Children need a dad. No amount of insisting 'but I can do whatever I want' can changed that fact.”
While many disagree with Aniston’s liberal views on parenting and the family structure, she has also been applauded for empowering women to take control of their own destiny without their reliance on a sexual partner.
“It is terrific that, in today's world, women have the choice to start a family when they are ready, and that might be before, or after, they meet the person they want to marry,” Jane Mattes, Director and Founder of Single Mothers By Choice, which provides information and emotional support to women in these situations, told us.
“It's a big decision and needs to be given careful thought, but it is definitely do-able if the woman has the emotional and financial resources to support herself and a child on her own.”
Eileen Koch, who raised a daughter on her own due to divorce, agreed that no woman should have to bypass the opportunity of having children of her own for the sake of not meeting Mr. Right.
“If a woman doesn't find love in her child-bearing years, she should not miss out on having a family. If the children are fortunate enough to have a loving mom and the mom's extending family, they will be just fine,” Koch said. “It would be nice for all of us to have everything, but sometimes in this world it just doesn't work out for all.”

EKC Client Morningside Recovery Extends Well Wishes to Lindsay
(via The Daily Pilot)
Recovery center agrees with judge in Lohan's caseA Newport Beach recovery center that was expected to treat actress Lindsay Lohan upon her release from jail Tuesday issued a statement that it agrees with a decision by a Beverly Hills judge's to send the actress to UCLA for treatment instead.
Lohan, 24, was expected to attend a Costa Mesa recovery home owned by Newport Beach-based Morningside Recovery after being released from a Los Angeles County women's jail in Lynwood. She was instead taken to UCLA Medical Center in Westwood.
"Morningside Recovery supports Judge Marsha Revel's decision to follow the advice of the court-appointed psychiatrists assigned to Ms. Lohan's case, and agree with the need to place clients in the appropriate level of care," Morningside spokeswoman Eileen Koch said in e-mail to the Daily Pilot. "In some cases, a higher level of containment provided by only a hospital institution, such as UCLA, is beneficial before implementing Morningside Recovery's multi-disciplinary clinical programs in our residential and extended care treatment.
"We hope, as we do with all those in treatment, that this decision for Ms. Lohan's welfare provides her a continuum of care that supports sustainable recovery." (read more...)

LA Times Looks Forward to Super X at the X Games
At X Games 16 there's something new-- and something old, revisited.
by Baxter Holmes
Boil the history of action sports down to its essence, and a single phrase emerges: Can you top this?
That concept has driven the sport's growth for decades, and the X Games does the same, adding new events or twists to old ones seemingly every year.
For example, the X Games added the big air skateboarding event in 2004 after Danny Way, the event's pioneer, pushed for it. Another change came in 2009 when X Games officials heeded the request of skaters and created a concrete skate park for a different skateboarding competition, switching from the wooden park used the year before.
This year, at X Games 16, which begins Thursday in downtown Los Angeles, there are two new events, plus an old event that returns to its iconic birthplace. Here's a look at what's new:
Real Street
In a nod to the growing skateboard filming industry, the X Games allowed 12 top street skaters to each submit a one-minute, trick-loaded video for a shot at a gold medal and a $50,000 first prize.
"There's a huge segment of skaters and all they want to do is film," said Tim Reed, ESPN senior director of sports and competition. "It's great to give them a board platform to show what they can do."
The videos are available online and will be telecast Sunday. A panel of professional skaters will decide the winner. Fans can vote online for their own favorite; the winner there gets $2,500.
Johnny Layton, a street skater from Long Beach, agreed to enter the competition because making videos is a daily routine for him, as it is with many other skaters. "It's crazy — every day you can go online and there's another person with another video," he said. (read more...)

ESPN Catches Up with Josh Hansen About X Games, "The Hills"
Josh Hansen Bounces off the Satellites
Two-time X Games Super X gold medalist Josh Hansen heads to "The Hills," but remains grounded, ready to win his third consecutive gold medal.

(Getty Images for MTV.com)If you're like 2.5 million other viewers, on Tuesday night, July 12, 2010, you tuned-in to watch the final episode of the MTV series The Hills. In that final episode appeared Team Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki rider Josh Hansen. A series that has followed the jet set/Lipstick City lifestyle of a few 20-something Hollywood Hills-based young women, one of the stars of the wildly popular reality series is a girl named Stephanie Pratt. Well, while the final year of production was up and running, Stephanie Pratt met Josh Hansen and the two became an item. So much so that Hansen appeared in a few of the show's final episodes. And in the very final show, Hansen brought Pratt out to show her just what he did for a living.
"Josh invited me to go and watch him do Supercross," Pratt said to one of her buddies in that episode. "I'm going to go down the track."
And that she did. And after Hansen rode for a while, bedazzling her, she commented, "Oh my God! No way! You're, like, the most masculine guy I've ever dated."
Yep. So in the spring and summer of 2010, not only did Josh Hansen find a way back onto the victory podium (at the Salt Lake Supercross), he also managed to receive some prime time TV coverage and pull a pretty cool chick. Josh Hansen is on a bit of a roll as of late, and that's a good thing as he prepares to go after his third consecutive X Games Super X Gold Medal in two weeks' time at the ancient Los Angeles memorial Coliseum. Putting in countless laps on the Kawasaki test track, today, after a lengthy practice and test session in 103-degree heat, Hansen swung by to say hello and fill us in on what's been going on in his life.
"A lot of people follow that show," he explained when we asked him what it was like to be a part of The Hills. "It's kind of crazy because I've never followed the show. I didn't know people were so pumped and hyped on it. However, I just want to be Josh the Dirt Bike Guy." (read more...)

::HOT from Koch:: X Games Champ Josh Hansen Shoots for a Three-Peat Victory
Following a comeback season, the 26-year-old has been invited to compete in this year’s following main events: Best Whip, Speed & Style and Super X. Hansen hopes to close the summer with another win under his belt.
In 2009, Hansen elected to put his career on hold after the tragic loss of two close friends, choosing only four AMA races to compete in for the year. In January, renowned motocross coach Mitch Payton selected Hansen to ride the West Region for the Monster Energy/Pro Circuit team. Making what many have called a comeback, Hansen finished at the top of the season, winning the final round of the 2010 Supercross West Lites series at Salt Lake City, placing second at the AMA East/West Shootouts in Vegas, and concluding top 10 overall.
Since stepping into the limelight of professional motocross at the age of 17, Hansen’s career has exploded, receiving top honors in the AMA Lites Class and Full Factory Ride sponsorships, a professional campaign that has placed him amongst the very best of the sport.
X Games 16 will be held in Los Angeles from July 29-Aug 1 at the following venues: L.A. Live, L.A. Coliseum, Nokia Theater and STAPLES Center. For a full schedule, visit www.xgames.com.
